Reno's air quality is expected to worsen this week due to smoke from fires in California, Oregon and Nevada settling in the region.
Northern Nevada Public Health’s air quality management division issued an advisory for the Reno-Sparks area Wednesday.
The advisory is in effect through Thursday, Aug. 6 because the air quality index is expected to reach between 101 to 150, which is the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" range for ground-level ozone.
Unlike the ozone in our atmosphere, ground-level ozone forms when sunlight reacts to pollutants on the ground and can cause several health issues, NNPH said in a news release.
Sensitive groups, which include children, older adults, outdoor workers, and those with asthma or other lung diseases, are warned to limit outdoor exposure when the air quality index reaches these levels.
People with asthma should follow their asthma action plan and keep quick-relief medicine handy.
Everyone else should consider making outdoor activities shorter and less intense.
“With smoke from the Gann Fire (in California) causing increasing ozone, we are issuing an air quality advisory through tomorrow and encourage those in sensitive groups to be aware and stay safe," said Francisco Vega, division director for NNPH's air quality team said Wednesday.
More: Smoke settles over Reno this week from Oregon, California, Nevada fires
The National Weather Service in Reno said a lot of the smoke is also from the Oregon fires, including the Rowe Creek Complex Fire, which has burned roughly 329,000 acres, and the Shingle Fire, which has burned over 70,000 acres in central Oregon.
The New Pass Fire, which has burned roughly 35,600 acres east of Reno and Fallon, will also bring some smoke into the area.
However, NWS Reno said most of that fire's smoke is heading southeast.
The U.S.
Forest Service in Tahoe said the Elephant Fire in Loyalton, California, will continue to burn the remaining 2,200 unburned acres within the interior of the fire over the coming weeks, producing moderate levels of smoke.
This fire is contained, but smoke will be visible in surrounding communities until the interior vegetation burns out.
Sensitive groups can monitor the air quality at AirNow.gov.
