A new brewery opened last month in D.C.’s Shaw neighborhood.
It’s called Urban Garden Brewing , and it’s the first brick and mortar brewery owned by a Black woman in the District, a bittersweet recognition for founder and CEO Eamoni Collier.
“I feel like because D.C. was originally known as Chocolate City, now having, like, a fully Black owned brewery, I feel like, dang, I wish this would have been sooner,” says Collier.
“But the other thing is also it’s a humbling experience because it means that now I have that opportunity… to give back in the same way that the community, the beer community has supported me.”
The menu includes six beer options including the three flagship beers: Chamolite (a garden ale), Roses Aren’t Dead (a pale ale), and Lotus Flower Bomb (a botanical IPA inspired by rapper Wale ).
“These are the beers that led us to having our own space,” says Collier, a D.C. native.
Urban Garden also has a food menu that includes selections like a burger, wings, potato wedges, and bowls along with a selection of cocktails including non-alcoholic ones, making it a worthwhile option for those who may want to skip the suds.
Collier says she also wants Urban Garden to be a hub for the community.
“I grew up in the city.
So I know what type of things and incentives and programs led me to be able to be a successful business owner today.
And I think that’s one of the great things about having this space  it’s not limited to like, ‘Oh, I have a restaurant.
Oh, I have brewery.’
I can partner with local businesses, local nonprofit organizations, too.
Give the community a space that they need.”
But aside from the food and community partnership opportunities, the space itself holds an even deeper meaning to Collier.
For one, she used to work there when it was occupied by Right Proper Brewpub .
“I learned about beer, I learned about the production,” Collier said on her opening day, which fell on Juneteenth.
“My first home brew kit was gifted by a manager here.
So it’s amazing to see, me blossoming and taking over this space.”
On a more personal note, Collier says her grandfather, late musician and producer Joe Tate, used to frequent the space back when it was Frank Holliday’s Pool Hall .
She even set up a listening lounge in his honor.
“If you would have told me eight years ago that I was going to own this space one day, I probably would have been like, ‘That’s crazy’,” says Collier.
“But also, it sounds about right.”

Soul Mega : “Soul Mega actually inspired me, and also encouraged me to [start] my beer brand.

Liquid Intrusions : “They work really, really hard and they’re not afraid to educate people on what it means to be black in craft beer.
