Trump holds housing hostage to ram through anti-voter bill 68%

President Donald Trump abruptly canceled a bill signing ceremony Wednesday for a landmark bipartisan housing bill that aims to make it more affordable to buy a home, saying he won’t sign it because Congress has yet to pass his voter suppression bill.
“Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, referencing the legislation that would require proof of citizenship to vote and ban mail-in voting.
Trump’s announcement surprised not only congressional Republicans—who embarrassingly showed up to the event—but also Trump’s own political team, which was planning on using the bill signing as a selling point for Republicans in the midterms.
Indeed, the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act—which passed the House and Senate with veto-proof majorities this week—bans private equity investment firms from buying up single-family homes, among other provisions.
The rise in private equity gobbling up homes has limited supply for average buyers, driving up prices and pushing the possibility of home ownership out of reach for the majority of Americans.

This was a signature commitment that President Trump laid out in the State of the Union.
Just a few months later, it becomes law,” James Blair, Trump’s former deputy chief of staff, wrote on X before the event was canceled.
But Trump pulled the rug out from under GOP leaders minutes before the ceremony was slated to begin, saying that his signature is now contingent on the passage of his SAVE Act, which currently doesn’t have the votes to pass and could have the unintended consequence of making it harder for Republicans to vote.

Republicans immediately started grumbling about the idiotic move.
“What a shit show,” an unnamed House Republican told NBC News' Melanie Zanona.
“A once in a generation housing bill falls victim to the nuts.”
“He’s having a fucking tantrum,” another unnamed House Republican told NOTUS.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune was more diplomatic with his rage.
“That was his call to make,” Thune said.
“What I would say is that the bill is a bill that's been worked on for a long time.
It’s an affordability issue, and eventually I hope he'll find his way to sign it.”
Meanwhile, Democrats immediately cited Trump's tantrum as proof that he doesn't care about helping Americans with affordability.
“Donald Trump holds a complete indifference to the cost squeeze on American families and to genuine efforts to do something about it,” Democratic Sen.
Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who introduced the housing legislation, told CNBC.
“He could be over here claiming a victory.
Instead he's saying 'No.'
It's because he really doesn't care about American families and doesn't care about the fact that prices are up.”
Trump went to Capitol Hill on Wednesday to urge Senate Republicans to pass his voter suppression bill and was asked by a reporter why he'd torpedo the housing legislation after Republicans spent so much time and money on it.
“Is this election legislation more important to you than resolving the housing crisis?”
the reporter asked.
“Every election is important.
We’re doing very well.
They want a lot of communists to come in,” Trump replied.
“I’m saying it a little bit differently, but the people they’re pushing are communists, and this country is not going to have communists.”
“That Trump is willing to let people stay homeless in order to get his election rigging bill passed is the least surprising thing that's happened in Washington this month,” Democratic Sen.
