Indy rapper Skypp’s new album is all about Black empowerment 15%

He wrote “The Soundtrack to Being Black” instead.
Although he’s now a pillar of the Indianapolis hip-hop scene, rapper Byron Horton, 34, known as Skypp , wasn’t always so brazen with his rhymes.
“He wouldn’t rap, but everyone around us was like, ‘Ah, nah, Skypp, he’s cold,’” says fellow rapper Khrishon Smith, 34, known as Bigg Woog .
Smith attended Warren Central High School with Horton.
“I just tried to egg him on to get him to rap, and I finally got under his skin enough to get him to battle me.
He went, and I was like, ‘This mothaf***a is good.’”
They became close ever since.
Horton and Smith formed the hip-hop duo known as Wyze Clik during their high school years, helping each other sharpen their talents as emcees.
“Trying to pop out alone was nerve-racking for me — I’m not an extroverted guy,” said Horton.
“He wasn’t either, but we gave each other the confidence and the courage to push forward with what we had in mind.”
Now, years later, Horton and Smith have each built impressive solo careers, regularly performing at Chreece and other notable Indianapolis hip-hop events, all while consistently releasing new music.
Skypp’s latest album, “The Soundtrack to Being Black,” focuses on all sides of the Black experience and is due out in early August.
It’s the follow-up to his 2023 album, “Sorry for My Trauma” and the 2024 album “Sorry for My Trauma Too.”
Horton had been working on a statement album, addressing the idea of legacy.
People addressed him as if he had already “made it.”
“It was as if my run was already over and my legacy was cemented,” Horton said.
“Which removed my relevance and insinuated that my best days were behind me.”
But while writing that album, this latest project emerged.
“I was writing these songs that were extremely bold and pro-Black, and it was just a vibe that I was more attracted to,” Horton said.
“I tried to speak on every part of the Black experience — Black joy, Black pain, Black struggle, Black wealth.”
When pressing play on “The Soundtrack to Being Black,” Horton hopes listeners are ready for a stirring sit-down.
“I really, really love it.
This is the first time I’ve been able to make music the way I always envisioned it sounding with no limitations or barriers.
I made it as big and as bold as I would want music to sound.”
In reflecting on the man Horton has become, Smith said he couldn’t be prouder of his longtime Wyze Clik collaborator.
“I just sent him a text the other day and told him how proud I was of him.”
Smith said.
“I said, ‘Bro, you’re successful, and I’m not talking about money.
You’re a great husband.
You’re a great father.
You’re a great son.
You’re a great friend.’
To me, the only currency we have in life is time, and he spends it better than anybody I know.”
