President Donald Trump said Monday that he plans to meet with newly sworn-in British Prime Minister Andy Burnham after what he described as an “interesting” and productive phone call.
“I had a very good conversation with the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Andy Burnham,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
“We discussed many subjects, including the outstanding relationship we have had with the UK.
We will be meeting in the not too distant future for topics of mutual interest.”
Trump said the two leaders discussed North Sea oil production, trade, the U.S.-U.K. military alliance, efforts to demine the Strait of Hormuz, and other issues.
“The Prime Minister has got a big job ahead of him, but he will be able to do it and, of course, the U.S.A. will be there to help!”
Trump wrote, adding that the call “went very well.”
The cordial exchange marks a notable shift in Trump’s public tone toward Burnham.
Burnham, who was sworn in as Britain’s prime minister earlier Monday after succeeding the deeply unpopular Keir Starmer , had previously been a vocal critic of Trump.
Following the Jan.
6 Capitol riot, Burnham wrote on social media that any U.K. politician who gave Trump “the time of day should be ashamed right now.”
Trump had also been cool toward Burnham in recent weeks.
But on Sunday, he praised the incoming prime minister for what he said was a commitment to expand North Sea oil drilling.
“The People of Aberdeen, in Scotland, are dancing in the streets because the new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, has stated that he will be opening up, all the way, the invaluable North Sea Oil!”
Trump posted on Truth Social, calling it one of the world’s greatest sources of high-quality oil.
Burnham invites Trump to Manchester in first call as prime minister
Before taking office, Burnham said Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would be among the first world leaders he would contact as prime minister.
Burnham became prime minister after meeting with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, where the monarch accepted Starmer’s resignation and asked Burnham to form a new government.
