Major service changes coming to 1, 2, 3 trains starting this weekend so MTA can update aging switches 4%

The MTA warned 1, 2, and 3 train riders on Tuesday of service changes it is making beginning this weekend in order to replace switches on the 7th Avenue subway line in Lower Manhattan.
Straphangers on all three lines, in addition to the 5 line, should prepare for the weekend switchups starting on July 24 and running through Aug. 24, the agency said.
On each of those weekends, the modified schedules will be in effect from 9:30 p.m on Friday through 5 a.m. on Monday.
The MTA said the work is necessary because the switches, mechanisms that allow trains to move between local and express tracks, are past their useful lives and must be updated to improve reliability and on-time performance.
It will also use those outages to perform structural maitanence, inspections, and electrical work.
“We’re replacing antiquated switches to reduce delays, improve service reliability and deliver a smoother ride,” said Demetrius Crichlow, president of MTA New York City Transit.
“As one of the oldest and largest systems in the world, we are constantly upgrading infrastructure to keep New York moving, and we appreciate riders’ patience as we perform this necessary upgrade," he added.
When it comes to the changes, the 1 train, which normally terminates at South Ferry near Lower Manhattan's Battery Park, will instead not travel south of 14th Street.
The 2 train will only run between Manhattan and the Bronx, between 34 St-Penn Station and Eastchester-Dyre Av — meaning Brooklyn-bound riders will need to take the 5 to reach its stops in that borough.
In the Bronx, the 2 will replace the 5 on the last leg of its usual Bronx route from E 180 St and Eastchester-Dyre Av.
The 3 train will not run at all.
The 4, which normally terminates at Crown Heights-Utica Av, will substitute for the 3 and go to New Lots Av.
Meanwhile, the 5 will run on the usual 2 line, going between Wakefield-241 St and Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College.
