Sen.
Graham becomes latest Trump-backed candidate to win GOP primary election

Trump-backed incumbent Senator Lindsey Graham has defeated four challengers to win the Republican nomination as he seeks his fifth term in the United States Senate.
In Tuesday’s primary election, with 57% of the vote counted, Graham (R-S.C.) led the field with 168,078 votes, or 58.4%, according to the Associated Press.
Investor and activist Calvin Cowen lost with 3% of the vote, author Thomas Dismukes received 4.8%, Horry County Republican Party Executive Committee member Patrick Herrmann received 3.8%, and family businessman Mark Lynch received 27.4% of the vote.
Graham, 70, was first sworn in to represent South Carolina in the Senate starting in 2003.
In the 2008 general election, he became the first candidate in the state’s history to receive over one million votes.
He was also the first member of his family to attend college, having earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of South Carolina.
The senator serves as the Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and is a member of the Appropriations, Judiciary and Environment and Public Works committees.
Before his career in the upper chamber, Graham served in the South Carolina House of Representatives starting in 1993, then in the U.S.
House of Representatives starting in 1995.
That same year, he joined the U.S.
Air Force Reserves, carrying out Reserve duties over congressional breaks and holidays during military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He retired from the Reserves in 2015 at the rank of Colonel.
One of his most notable bills is the Laken Riley Act of 2025, which requires the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to detain non-U.S. citizens who are unlawfully present and have been arrested, charged, or convicted of theft-related offenses, assault of a law enforcement officer, or any crime resulting in serious bodily injury or death.
The bill was highly publicized and named for Laken Riley, a nursing student who was raped and murdered by an illegal alien who would not have had access to her college campus had he been taken into custody for previous offenses.
Graham also sponsored the Secure America Act, which was introduced to fully fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) through fiscal year 2029.
President Donald Trump reminded South Carolinians to vote for Graham on Monday.
“Lindsey has been a wonderful friend, and has always been there when I needed him.
As the Chair of the Senate Budget Committee, Lindsey is fighting tirelessly to Grow the Economy, Lower Taxes, Cut Regulations, and Eliminate Government Waste,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“Lindsey is also relentlessly focused on helping us Keep our Border SECURE, Stop Migrant Crime, Strongly Support our Military/Veterans, Unleash American Energy DOMINANCE, Promote MADE IN THE U.S.A., Safeguard our Elections, Defend our always under siege Second Amendment, and ensure PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH.”
For the Democrat Party, Annie Andrews won the nomination with 167,768 votes, or 60%, beating Brandon Brown’s 31% and Freeman’s 8.4%.
Andrews, a pediatrician and mother, asserts on her campaign website that “Healthcare is a right, not a privilege.”
She promised to expand Medicaid and Medicare, in contrast to Graham, who introduced the Graham-Cassidy Bill in 2017 that would have ended a scheduled Medicaid expansion, though the measure ultimately failed.
She also promised to fight to restore the Roe v.
Wade decision, which ruled that the U.S.
Constitution protected the right of pregnant women to have abortions.
Graham, however, has repeatedly called for a federal abortion.
“As a doctor and a mom, I’ve cared for women in some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
I’ve seen what happens when politicians interfere with deeply personal medical decisions, she explained.
