COCONUT CREEK, Fla. — A fire erupted early Monday morning at a home in Coconut Creek, leaving seven cats dead and a man hospitalized, first responders confirmed.
According to Coconut Creek Fire Rescue officials, the fire was reported just before 4:15 a.m. in the 900 block of Palmetto Drive.
The flames tore through the garage before spreading to the roof, leaving extensive damage behind.
Officials confirmed that a man who lives at the home was transported to a local hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and at least seven cats were killed in the fire.
A dog did make it out of the home safely, they said.
The fire has since been extinguished.
“It’s like scary -- it’s like, what the heck is going on?”
one neighbor said.
“I walk here every morning -- every morning.
So this is unusual, very unusual.”
First responders said a family of three lives at the home and is now displaced.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
