Villain Arts Tattoo Festival draws 'tight-knit community' of inked enthusiasts to Reliant Center 10%

Lying on her back, Laura Crawley listened to a murder mystery audiobook as an artist inked a dragonfly onto her thigh Saturday at the annual Villain Arts Tattoo Festival.
Crawley estimated it would take about three hours to get the tattoo done, and another three for her husband to get a similar one for their 25th wedding anniversary.
“We commemorate where we go and [family] members who have passed, and every one of them has a significance,” Crawley said of her tattoos.
She was like many of those who had signed up to get a tattoo from well-known artists in the industry.
Others watched performances of physical feats or magic, or got their palms read at the festival, which started Friday and runs through Sunday at Reliant Center.
The Villain Arts festival, in its eighth year in Houston, was founded in 1999 as a single event in Philadelphia by tattoo artist Troy Timpel now stops in 34 cities.
The emcee for the Houston festival, Christopher Steele, said the organization welcomes everyone, tattooed or not, to experience the culture around the art form.
“I think a lot of it is drawing like-minded people all together under one building, and to get to share one of the greatest art forms in the world, which is tattooing,” Steele said.
It was Crawley’s first time getting a tattoo at the festival, but she estimates she has as many as 20 tattoos.
Other attendees, such as Javier Ramirez, have gotten multiple tattoos at the festival.
Ramirez’s first festival tattoo was a large octopus that took 15 hours to complete.
“Ever since, I've just been coming to browse around, look at different artists, especially because there's so many that are local here,” Ramirez said.
“So, I'll just collect Instagrams and shop around a little bit.”
Some artists fly in from across the country to attend the traveling festival, but many are based in Houston.
Alana Allingham, an artist based in Katy, said the festival is a great place to meet artists, show off her work and get new clients.
“I've met so many artists that I didn't realize were local,” Allingham said.
Allingham described the Houston tattoo community as close, something a few of the festival attendees have noticed.
“It’s pretty interesting when you have a city that's full of 3 million people in a widespread area, how there's a tight-knit community with it all,” said Ryan Martin, a first-time festival attendee.
Some, like Crawley and her husband, showed up with a plan for what tattoo they want and who they want to do it.
Others, such as Martin and Ramirez, decide based on what they see.
“If I see a tattoo that I just gotta have, I'll probably end up getting one, but I’ll mainly just see what kind of cool things that end up at this whole expo,” Martin said.
