Two women whom police were chasing after a shoplifting call were hit and killed as they tried to cross U.S. 59 on foot Thursday night.
Officers first received a report of a shoplifter at an Old Navy store in the 5000 block of Westheimer, Houston Police Department Assistant Chief James Bryant told OnScene TV.
"Officers got a vehicle description and they were able to locate the vehicle in the area," he said.
"They attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle at South Rice Avenue and Westpark Drive.
At that time the vehicle refused to stop and a pursuit started."
Bryant described the suspect vehicle as a dark Chevy Tahoe.
The vehicle traveled onto the northbound lanes of US 59 and struck another vehicle as the driver approached Interstate 45.
All four female occupants of the Tahoe got out of the vehicle and ran across U.S. 59 westbound, Bryant said.
"They made it across the northbound lanes of the freeway.
As they started crossing the southbound lanes, two of the women were struck by traffic and pronounced deceased at the scene," he said.
The other two females were arrested.
Bryant said information is still preliminary an investigation continues.
The identities of the four women were not available.
