After spending the past 15 years at the St.
Louis Zoo, Bakari the gorilla is heading to Florida for an important new role: starting a family of his own.
The 21-year-old western lowland gorilla recently moved to a zoo in central Florida, where he will take part in a conservation breeding program that helps maintain a healthy and genetically diverse population of gorillas in accredited zoos across North America.
“We wish Bakari all the best as he steps into this next chapter,” the St.
Louis Zoo said in a social media post announcing the move.
Bakari arrived in St.
Louis in 2011 from Brookfield Zoo Chicago, where he was born.
Since then, he has lived in the zoo’s Jungle of the Apes habitat as part of a bachelor troop, a social group made up of male gorillas.
Zoo officials say Bakari’s transfer will give him a chance to become the leader of his own family group.
The St.
Louis Zoo has been a longtime participant in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Western Lowland Gorilla Species Survival Plan.
The zoo was the first AZA-accredited institution and the first zoo in North America to establish a bachelor troop for western lowland gorillas.
While the name might sound unusual, bachelor troops are a natural part of gorilla life.
In the wild, groups of adult and young male gorillas often live and travel together before eventually joining or leading breeding groups.
Zoos use bachelor troops in a similar way, helping young males develop social skills before taking on leadership roles as adults, also known as silverbacks.
The zoo said Bakari’s departure is part of a larger conservation mission.
Although western lowland gorillas are the most common of the four gorilla subspecies, they are classified as critically endangered and face serious threats in the wild, including habitat loss, poaching and disease.
