The National Weather Service is forecasting daily thunderstorm chances across Southern Nevada through Sunday, with flash flooding and gusty outflow winds posing the primary hazards, NWS Las Vegas meteorologist Andy Gorelow said today.
Monsoon moisture will fuel storm activity throughout the week, with the best storm chances concentrated in southeastern Nevada and northwestern Arizona, Gorelow said in the agency’s weekly weather webinar.
Tuesday is expected to bring the broadest storm coverage, particularly across Inyo County in California and Lincoln County in Nevada.
High temperatures will remain near normal for most of the week before climbing 3 to 5 degrees above normal heading into next weekend.
Death Valley’s Furnace Creek  the hottest reporting station in the region  is forecast to approach 120 degrees by Thursday.
Las Vegas is projected to see highs of 105 to 109 degrees through the period.
Despite near-normal daytime highs, overnight lows will stay unusually warm as monsoonal moisture remains in place, Gorelow said.
Las Vegas, Laughlin and Lake Havasu City, Ariz., are expected to see lows above 90 degrees by the end of the week.
Furnace Creek’s overnight temperatures are forecast to remain above 100 degrees throughout.
The weather service has issued marginal to slight excessive rainfall risk designations across portions of the region for Monday and Tuesday.
Mohave County, Ariz., carries a slight risk Monday  meaning at least a 15% probability of rainfall capable of producing flash flooding.
Southern Nevada and Inyo County face a marginal risk, reflecting at least a 5% probability.
Those risks decrease Wednesday and Thursday, with the marginal risk persisting mainly in Lincoln and Mohave counties.
Storms this week could produce heavy rain and localized flash flooding in normally dry washes, flood channels and low water crossings, as well as sudden wind gusts exceeding 40 mph, dangerous lightning and rapidly deteriorating boating conditions, the NWS said.
Maximum wind gusts outside of any storm outflow are expected to stay around 20 mph.
Looking ahead to the July 25–29 period, the NWS’s 6-to-10-day outlook calls for above-normal temperatures across the region, with continued above-normal precipitation probabilities tied to ongoing monsoon moisture.
