Maplewood Richmond Heights School District families, staff and local activists rallied in downtown St.
Louis on Monday for a family in their community that is to be deported this summer.
Alba Del Socorro Matamoro-Hernandez is a custodian at the district's Education Center.
She and her family fled political persecution in Nicaragua and sought asylum in the U.S. four years ago.
Nearly a hundred community members gathered outside the Robert A.
Young Federal Building as she attended an immigration check-in.
“I'm really emotional.
I wasn't expecting so much love from the residents of St.
Louis, the staff and students from the school,” Del Socorro Matamoro-Hernandez said in Spanish.
Del Socorro Matamoro-Hernandez had requested support from the school community as she attended her appointment.
She was greeted with a sea of blue MRH shirts and signs declaring “immigrants are welcome here.”
The rally, which was co-organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation, came after U.S.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained her husband, Boanerges Flores-Bravo, during a routine check-in on May 18.
He worked as a custodian in the district.
The couple was granted work permits and settled in St.
Louis County with their daughter, regularly checking in with ICE as the family’s case made its way through the system.
Immigration officials instructed Del Socorro Matamoro-Hernandez to self-deport with their daughter, Mauren, or be sent to a detention center to wait out their cases.
Flores-Bravo is currently being held in a detention facility in Louisiana.
No state or federal court filings detailing any criminal conduct for either parent could be immediately found as of Monday afternoon.
Del Socorro Matamoro-Hernandez signed paperwork Monday that authorizes her deportation.
U.S. immigration officials will now send her a plane ticket for her and Mauren.
She has another appointment scheduled for June 15.
Dana Isom, a retired teacher, worked alongside Del Socorro Matamoro-Hernandez at the Early Education Center.
Isom said her students love Del Socorro Matamoro-Hernandez.
“She works hard.
She's kind.
She is sweet to the children.
They all love her.
We learned Spanish in my class just so we could talk to her,” Isom said.
“She doesn't deserve what's happening to her family.
They've done everything right and everything legal.”
In her remarks to the crowd, MRH Elementary School teacher Heather Jaber spoke directly to students who attended the rally.
“Sometimes adults, even leaders, make choices that are unfair and harmful to families.
This can happen when fear and prejudice shape decisions, instead of empathy and fairness,” Jaber said.
“But leaders do not last forever.
In a democracy, all of us have the power to ask questions and speak up, to organize, to vote, and to work together to make laws and systems more fair.”
The teachers set up a GoFundMe page and have raised over $25,000 for the family since the community learned about Flores-Bravo’s detention.
U.S.
Rep.
Wesley Bell, D-St.
Louis County, attended the rally and said he will travel to the detention center in Louisiana to visit Flores-Bravo.
Bell is hoping to stop the family’s deportation but needs Flores-Bravo to first sign a privacy form that would authorize immigration officials to release details of his detention to his office.
So far, it’s been a challenge to get authorities at the detention center to cooperate, according to Bell.
“We're talking about people who are here following the rules, who have not violated any laws.
They're hardworking people.
They're paying taxes,” Bell said.
“We can't even get a simple form filled, so we can just find out what's going on, and it's just horrible.”
Bell offered to take handwritten notes from Del Socorro Matamoro-Hernandez and Mauren to Louisiana.
“The person giving you this note is someone we trust.
Please tell him about our case.
He is going to try to get you out of there so we can be together,” Del Socorro Matamoro-Hernandez wrote.
Mauren wrote:  I love you, dad.
You always make me happy.
Don't give up.”
