An early and aggressive online revolt from within the Republican Party is targeting President Donald Trump's heir apparent to lead the MAGA movement, according to a new report.
Vice President JD Vance, currently weighing his 2028 ambitions, is confronting an unusually early, aggressive, and highly online revolt from within his own party, reported the Washington Post .
"Knives are out for Vance in the GOP," the headline reads.
"His allies say it’s a coordinated 'op.'"
Over the past week in particular, a "Never Vance" movement has flooded social media with attacks branding him "unfit" for office, largely over his efforts to broker a peace deal with Iran.
Critics have gone so far as to compare him ideologically to Barack Obama and Bernie Sanders, and have claimed, without evidence, that he's pursuing policy independent of Trump's wishes.
Vance allies describe the hostility as unlike anything faced by a vice president in decades, both in how early it's arrived — two full years before Republicans choose their next presidential nominee — and in its sheer intensity, amplified by a social-media landscape that didn't exist in earlier eras of vice-presidential politics.
But allies close to Vance argue the attacks aren't what they appear to be, insisting that much of the activity is inauthentic and possibly coordinated — pointing to suspicious patterns, including anti-Vance accounts that appear to be based outside the U.S. and a wave of hostile replies to pro-Vance posts from accounts with no organic following or amplification.
"Loud Washington establishment voices form an online cacophony," said Vance-aligned commentator Steve Cortes, "but they do not remotely represent the consensus views of Republican voters."
The knives have been out for Vance since before he joined the ticket in 2024, when hawkish donors and conservative media figures lobbied Trump to pick Marco Rubio or Doug Burgum instead.
What's playing out now is the resurgence of that same rift — a foreign policy civil war within the GOP coalition.
Vance's brand of politics is populist and skeptical of foreign military entanglements, a posture that has repeatedly put him at odds with the party's more hawkish, pro-Israel wing.
Tensions first peaked last fall, when neoconservative and pro-Israel activists accused him of antisemitism for engaging sympathetically with voices skeptical of U.S.-Israel policy.
They flared again after his three-hour appearance on Joe Rogan's podcast, where Vance called himself a "reasonable moderate" on Israel and openly dismissed criticism from paid influencers.
“You know, my response to that is, ‘Well, go to hell,’” Vance told Rogan.
“I’m going to do what I have to do for the American people.
I represent Americans first, and that’s the way that I’ve tried to do this job.”
That willingness to stake out daylight from party orthodoxy — and, at times, subtle distance from Trump himself on Iran — is precisely what's drawing fire.
As one former Mike Pence aide observed, publicly signaling policy differences invites a level of scrutiny that a more cautious posture might avoid.
“I think that there’s been a difference in the way that the current team has made clear their policy differences,” said Marc Short, the who served as chief of staff to Trump's first vice president.
“So I think that does create more scrutiny when you do that.”
