What to know
President Donald Trump this afternoon walked back the strikes he threatened to carry out against Iran tonight, saying on Truth Social that talks with the Islamic Republic “have been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved.”
But a senior Iranian official linked with the talks told MS NOW that Iran has not yet agreed to any memorandum of understanding or framework of a deal with the United States.
The president vowed this morning that the United States would launch “bigger” and “more powerful” military action on Iran tonight, in what would be a third attack since the nations began trading strikes this week.
Trump said earlier today on social media that the U.S. would seize Iran’s oil export hub Kharg Island and other oil infrastructure sites.
Despite the latest exchange of strikes and Trump’s threats to keep military pressure up to get a deal, oil prices remained largely unchanged this morning, though the war’s economic fallout continues to loom large ahead of November’s high-stakes midterm elections.
