ICE shooting fallout in Maine puts spotlight on Sen. Collin’s AG vote 17%

With the Senate expected to confirm Todd Blanche as the next U.S.
Attorney General this week, pressure from watchdog groups is mounting on Sen.
Susan Collins, R-Maine, who may cast the deciding vote.
Blanche has vowed in writing the Justice Department will not create the “ anti-weaponization fund ” for the president’s allies, something Collins rejected.
But Blanche has also slowed investigations of fatal ICE shootings, including the death of a young father in Maine last month.
Brett Edkins, managing director of policy and political affairs for the advocacy group Stand Up America, said Mainers want answers but the Blanche vote stands in their way.
“Her concern, her strongly worded letters, those are not enough anymore.
Mainers need action from Senator Collins, and that starts with voting no on Blanche’s nomination,” Edkins asserted.
Collins has asked the Justice Department to cooperate with local and state authorities to give the public confidence an inquiry into the Maine shooting is fair but Blanche told a Senate committee their help was not needed to ensure an independent investigation.
Collins’ office did not respond to requests for an interview.
While family members of people killed by undocumented immigrants in the U.S. praise Blanche for making victims a priority, his critics said he is letting ICE agents off the hook.
After the deadly shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, Blanche said there was no basis for criminal investigations into officers’ actions and federal agents were “acting humanely.”
He cleared the officer who shot Good before an FBI review and stalled sharing any investigative materials with Minnesota authorities until just last month.
Edkins argued if Collins votes to confirm Blanche, it would be an endorsement for ICE agents to act with impunity and a denial of justice for Maine.
“I’m not sure what more Susan Collins needs to see to understand that Todd Blanche has one client.
It’s Donald Trump and his administration and his ICE forces, not the American people,” Edkins contended.
Edkins acknowledged the public initially supported the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration at the border but his plans for mass deportation and stepped-up ICE raids are increasingly unpopular.
A July YouGov poll showed 58% of Americans who had heard about recent ICE shootings supported abolishing ICE altogether, while only 36% said they would oppose closing the agency.
