Fans heading downtown for this week’s Cardinals homestand, commuters crossing the river for work and anyone planning a trip through the heart of St.
Louis should prepare for traffic disruptions after a cave-in beneath a section of Interstate 44 forced state transportation officials to close a key stretch of highway.
The closure, prompted by a large hole that opened beneath the interstate near Broadway and Biddle Street, has created a ripple effect across the region’s highway network.
Drivers approaching downtown from Illinois, south St.
Louis and other parts of the metro area are likely to encounter detours, ramp closures and heavier-than-normal traffic as transportation crews assess the damage and plan repairs.
Here’s how the closures could affect your trip into downtown St.
Louis from each direction:
Interstate 44 eastbound
Eastbound I-44 is closed at the Poplar Street Bridge.
If you’re headed east on I-44 into downtown St.
Louis, you’ll need to take Exit 290C to Park Avenue.
Interstate 44 westbound
I-44 westbound from I-70 is shut down.
If you’re headed that direction, you’ll need to get off at Tucker Boulevard (Exit 249b) to access downtown.
Drivers will still be able to use the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge to continue on I-70 east into Illinois.
Drivers who want to go from I-44 to I-70 should use Jefferson, then Parnell and then Salisbury, or the reverse for southbound traffic.
Interstate 70 eastbound
The eastbound I-70 express lanes are closed at Union Boulevard.
The westbound I-70 express lanes are still open.
Downtown St.
Louis streets
Northbound and southbound Broadway are both closed at Biddle.
This is the location of the hole, and traffic is not allowed in the area.
Additionally, St.
Louis police have asked pedestrians and others coming to “look” at the hole to avoid the area.
Northbound 4th Street is closed at Washington Avenue.
Traffic is being detoured west to Tucker Boulevard.
This caused the most significant issues and backups during the Monday morning commute, so take your time if you’re in this area.
Approach from Illinois
The ramps from I-64 westbound/Poplar Street Bridge to Walnut and I-44 are closed.
Drivers from Illinois can continue across the bridge into downtown St.
Louis.
They will then be able to use the 9th Street exit (Exit 40A) to get downtown or continue on I-64.
To avoid the roadways altogether, travelers can take Metro Transit.
Officials say Metro Transit is unaffected by the cave-in and will be fully functional.
