St.
Louisans can celebrate Juneteenth with parades, community concerts, historical programs, special menus and other events throughout the region.
The festivities are marking June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved Black people in the U.S. were made free by executive decree  more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
Over time, Black Americans began commemorating the day with celebrations, and in 2021 it became a federal holiday.
St.
Louisans like Trezette Dixon tell St.
Louis Public Radio that the holiday is a chance to be free, joyful and celebrate Black history.
“We are unapologetically celebrating freedom to be ourselves, to be a part of our community that's thriving,” she said at the Dellwood parade last year.
“To be an example to those that need us  to show that we are one St.
Louis, one voice, one movement.”
