The party plans to hold a nominating convention, likely to take place around the 25th, where delegates from around the state will decide the nominee.
This seems obvious.
But the details are more complicated to work out.
According to a mass email sent by Cumberland County Democratic Party Chair Joe Zamboni, he and the other 15 county chairs will be meeting on Thursday night to discuss “what we think we can reasonably do, and quickly” in terms of a process for selecting delegates to a nominating convention two weeks from now.
“[E]ach county committee will be responsible for selecting its delegates through a process that is consistent (and workable) across all 16 counties,” wrote Zamboni.
“Those details are still being considered, and we expect additional guidance from the Maine Democratic Party very soon and sign on by the County Chairs.”
Which slates of delegates are elected at these local meetings will likely determine which candidate wins at the convention.
According to Zamboni, local Democratic activists across Maine are working to determine the most inclusive process that can be organized within the tight timeline allowed by state law.
