China’s Commerce Ministry on Monday added 20 Japanese companies and organizations to its export control list, including the National Institute for Defense Studies and multiple Mitsubishi-affiliated defense contractors, as Beijing continues to tighten restrictions on entities it claims are tied to Tokyo’s “remilitarization.”
The designation prohibits Chinese exporters from supplying dual-use items to the listed entities, while also barring overseas companies and individuals from transferring Chinese-origin dual-use goods to them.
Any ongoing transactions must also be halted immediately.
A Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson said in a news release announcing the measures that they were “completely justified, reasonable and lawful,” and reiterated that their purpose was to curb what it described as Japan’s remilitarization and pursuit of nuclear weapons.
