New research indicates women with polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) have a four times higher risk of developing heart disease.
The study, published in The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology, & Women’s Health, analyzed health insurance data from over 400,000 women with PMOS.
This elevated risk persisted even after accounting for other cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
Researchers emphasize the need for improved physician education and patient awareness regarding cardiovascular disease risk in PMOS to facilitate early preventive interventions.
PMOS, formerly known as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), affects millions of women and is often underdiagnosed, with health bodies now recommending annual monitoring.
