HILTON HEAD ISLAND — A third person has died on Beaufort County roads in a little over a week.
A driver was killed at the scene of a single-vehicle crash that occurred on the Sea Pines traffic circle shortly before 11 p.m.
July 23.
The driver has not yet been identified by the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office.
The driver was traveling on Palmetto Bay Road when they crossed onto the traffic circle and struck several trees, according to Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the S.C.
Highway Patrol.
The collision remains under investigation.
On July 15, 72-year-old Gregory Herman of Bluffton was struck and killed as he rode an electric bicycle on Hilton Head Island.
Herman was declared dead at the scene after suffering blunt-force injuries sustained in the collision with a 2019 Dodge Charger on Marshland Road.
Two days later, Christopher James, 31, of Wrens, Ga., died after being struck while riding a bicycle by 2011 Toyota SUV.
Both James and the Toyota were travelling north on Trask Parkway near Stroban Road at approximately 9:40 a.m. when the collision occurred.
James died at the scene from blunt-force trauma.
To date, 15 people have been killed on Beaufort County roads this year compared to nine fatalities over the same period in 2025.
Statewide, both the number of fatal accidents and the number of fatalities so far in 2026 are down compared to 2025.
