World’s first centaur robot from China speeds over rough ground and lifts loads 81%

A Chinese robotics company has unveiled what it describes as the world’s first “centaur” wheel-leg hybrid robot. 
Developed by Shanghai-based Run Robotics, the AI-powered machine combines wheeled mobility with legged locomotion, enabling both high-speed movement and the ability to navigate complex terrain. 
Showcased at the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC 2026) in Shanghai, the company said more than 95 percent of the robot’s core components are domestically produced. 
Designed for demanding environments, the robot is intended for applications including autonomous inspection, firefighting, and emergency rescue operations. 
Reinventing mobile robotics 
The world’s first “centaur” wheel-leg hybrid robot was unveiled at WAIC 2026 in Shanghai, which was held from July 17-20, blending wheeled mobility and robotic manipulation for use in industrial and emergency response scenarios. 
A centaur robot takes inspiration from the mythical creature with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a horse. 
Unlike conventional humanoid robots that rely on bipedal walking, the “centaur” features a split-body design, pairing a four-wheel all-terrain chassis with a human-like upper body equipped with robotic arms, according to Global Times ( GT ). 
The company said the design enables the robot to move rapidly across rugged terrain while carrying out complex physical tasks. 
Intended for demanding environments, it can be deployed for autonomous inspections, firefighting, emergency rescue, mining operations, oilfield inspections and industrial maintenance. 
Its wheeled lower body allows it to travel efficiently through uneven surfaces and hazardous sites, while the upper body performs tasks beyond the capabilities of traditional inspection robots. 
These include clearing obstacles, operating equipment, and assisting rescue teams in dangerous environments. 
Run Robotics said the robot is engineered to meet explosion-proof requirements while remaining lightweight and reliable. 
It can carry a typical payload of 220 to 265 pounds (100 to 120 kilograms) and support a maximum static load of 463 pounds (210 kilograms). 
The modular platform can also be equipped with different upper-body configurations, including dual robotic arms, dexterous hands and multidimensional force sensors, depending on operational requirements. 
Robotics momentum grows 
The robot is equipped with a self-developed environmental perception system that integrates lidar, binocular vision and depth cameras . 
According to the company, the system enables the robot to identify pipelines, valves, gauges, obstacles and people, assess their positions and status, autonomously plan routes, avoid obstacles and accurately locate operational targets, creating a closed loop from perception to decision-making. 
Run Robotics said more than 95 percent of the robot’s core components are domestically produced, highlighting China’s growing capabilities in advanced robotics manufacturing. 
The company has established its research and production base in Shanghai’s Zhangjiang Science City, leveraging the area’s industrial ecosystem, engineering talent and policy support to strengthen its supply chain and accelerate product development, as reported by GT . 
According to Run Robotics, the “centaur” robot is the result of continuous product refinement aimed at overcoming long-standing challenges, including limited operational capability, poor adaptability across diverse environments and barriers to large-scale deployment. 
The company plans to complete an automated assembly line in the fourth quarter of 2026 and said it has already secured commercial orders for the robot. 
The launch was one of the highlights of this year’s WAIC 2026 , which featured more than 1,000 companies, over 3,000 exhibits, 349 global product debuts and 201 newly unveiled technologies. 
China’s state broadcaster CCTV News included the “centaur” robot among the event’s 10 standout exhibits. 
The unveiling also reflects China’s rapid advances in intelligent robotics. 
According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Chinese companies have developed more than 400 humanoid robot models, accounting for over half of the global total, while domestically developed quadruped robots represent nearly 70 percent of worldwide sales, GT reported .
