Virginia Steel and Fabrication to invest $3.6 million, create 52 jobs in Bland County 40%

A Bland County-based steel fabricator will invest $3.6 million to expand its operations, creating 52 jobs, according to the governor’s office. 
Virginia Steel and Fabrication Inc. will more than triple its workforce of 19 employees as it adds new manufacturing equipment and increases its production capacity, according to a Wednesday announcement from Gov. 
Abigail Spanberger. 
“This expansion strengthens a homegrown Virginia business, creates new opportunities for Southwest Virginia, and reinforces the Commonwealth’s position as a leader in advanced manufacturing,” Spanberger said in a news release. 
Founded in 1994, Virginia Steel and Fabrication offers custom fabrication, welding and steel purchasing services for commercial and industrial products. 
It’s located on Progress Drive off U.S. 52 in the Bastian community. 
“This investment is first and foremost an investment in the people of Southwest Virginia,” Virginia Steel and Fabrication directors Shaun Huffman and Blake Ray said in the release. 
“We are creating careers that provide long-term opportunities, advanced technical skills, and a future for families right here at home while working alongside our educational, community, and state partners to strengthen the region’s manufacturing workforce.” 
Virginia Steel’s investment includes plans to upgrade and automate key manufacturing equipment, expand its existing facility and add infrastructure upgrades to support the transportation of finished products, according to the news release. 
Spanberger approved a $200,000 state grant to assist Bland County with the project, and a state jobs program will help with employee training. 
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with the county, the Mount Rogers Regional Partnership and the Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission to secure the project, according to the release. 
“Bland County is proud to support Virginia Steel’s continued growth in Bastian  We are excited to partner with them as they strengthen our local economy and continue to offer quality career opportunities for our residents,” County Administrator Cameron Burton said in the release.
