Nurses at Maine Medical Center in Portland will gather in protest Wednesday morning following their colleague’s apprehension by U.S.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Debora Kapisha, a registered nurse at the hospital, was detained by ICE last week while traveling through Logan Airport in Boston, according to a press release from the Maine State Nurses Association.
Her coworkers will protest at 10:30 a.m. outside of the hospital, demanding Kapisha be released and that Maine Medical Center “take immediate steps to formally sponsor her for permanent residency.”
Kapisha, who is from the southern African country of Zambia, is an asylum seeker who is legally authorized to work in the country, according to the union.
“Debora is an amazing nurse and takes great care of her patients,” nurse Abigail Nelson said in a statement.
“She is a kind and supportive coworker.
We are like a family here and it feels like a piece of us is missing.”
ICE’s website confirms that Kapisha is in custody, though it does not disclose where she is being held.
Spokespeople for ICE and the U.S.
Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to requests for information about her detention.
Court documents show that she has challenged her detention in U.S.
District Court in Massachusetts.
The Maine State Nurses Association is coordinating with Kapisha’s attorneys to prevent her prospective transfer from Massachusetts to Louisiana, according to the news release.
Kerry Doyle, an attorney representing Kapisha, declined to comment on the case and said she doesn’t know where her client is currently being held.
