Rowena Brown says that she was assaulted and robbed in Oakland on July 18.
Brown’s office published social media posts this morning disclosing that the at-large member of the City Council was the victim of a crime allegedly committed by an acquaintance whom Brown had been supporting through a difficult time.
Brown sought medical treatment and is recovering with the support of loved ones, according to social media posts.
“We are grateful to the Oakland Police Department for its swift response, for taking the suspect into custody, and for its continued investigation of the incident,” Brown’s office said in a post.
“We ask that Councilmember Brown’s privacy be respected as she recovers.”
Brown’s office did not immediately respond to an interview request.
OPD told The Oaklandside that the department responded to an incident in West Oakland just before 12:45 a.m. on July 19.
Officers located a victim who was injured during the assault.
On July 21, OPD Ceasefire officers arrested a suspect outside the city.
The department identified the suspect as Ahshatae Millhouse.
Millhouse is a member of Oakland’s Cannabis Advisory Commission, a city board, and she runs a music therapy and mental health nonprofit and at least two local businesses.
Social media posts indicate Millhouse and Brown have known each other for several years, and Millhouse campaigned for the councilmember in 2024.
On Wednesday, the Alameda County District Attorney charged Millhouse with three felonies, including first-degree residential robbery, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, and false imprisonment by violence.
Brown’s social media posts have drawn an outpouring of support from dozens of concerned community members, including some of her fellow councilmembers.
“Sending you love, healing and support during this difficult time,” Councilmember Janani Ramachandran wrote.
“You are an incredibly strong person and Oakland is lucky to have your leadership!”
In a statement on social media, Mayor Barbara Lee said she’s been in touch with Brown, who she said is well and recovering from her injuries as she continues to serve residents of Oakland.
Brown was elected in 2024 to the at-large seat, which represents the entire city of Oakland.
We spent a week following Brown earlier this year, observing her day-to-day work.
According to the most recent OPD crime data report, overall crime in Oakland is down 18% so far this year compared to the same time in 2025, and down 23% compared to the year-to-date average for the past three years.
There have been 1,462 reported aggravated assaults so far this year, which is 12% down compared to the same time in 2025.
There have been 781 reported robberies, which is 28% down compared to the same time last year.
