Former Lynn teacher, nationally honored, charged with child rape 11%

A former Lynn teacher nationally recognized for his work in the classroom was charged Wednesday on child rape involving a 14-year-old middle schooler, prosecutors said.
Tymond Tran, 38, who also taught in Lowell, was arraigned in Salem Superior Court, according to Essex District Attorney Paul F.
Tucker’s office.
He pleaded not guilty to charges of rape of a child aggravated by an age difference of 10 years or more, indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or over, exhibiting a child in a nude or lascivious pose, and distributing obscene matter to a minor, Tucker’s office said in a statement.
Tran was released on personal recognizance, but with several conditions.
He must wear a GPS monitoring device and be on house arrest 24/7 at an Attleboro address, leaving only for medical appointments, court records show.
He must have no unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 18, including any victims or witnesses, consent to random device searches, and not possess any child sexual abuse material.
He is scheduled to return to court for a pre-trial conference Aug.

A lawyer for Tran did not respond to a request for comment.
The alleged crimes occurred during the 2022-23 school year when Tran was an eighth-grade teacher at Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Lynn, the statement said.
Tran<b> </b>worked in the Lynn Public Schools from 2021 to 2024 and left the district on his own, without achieving profession status, Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson and Superintendent of Schools Molly Cohen said in a joint statement.
“We are shocked and disturbed by this news,” the statement said.
“Our primary concern is for the well-being of the former LPS student.
Our hope for that student is healing and justice.”
The statement said the mayor and superintendent are conducting an independent investigation, and will make support available to the school community.
In 2024, Tran was named one of Amazon’s Future Engineer Teachers of the Year while he worked at Thurgood Marshall.
He won a $5,000 cash prize for the award, and the school was granted $25,000.
Tran most recently worked at Lowell Community Charter Public School, and was “immediately terminated” last month after details of his criminal charges were made available, said the school’s executive director, Nicholas Leonardos, in a statement.
“Like all employees, this individual underwent all required state and federal criminal background checks prior to employment,” Leonardos said.
“Because the charges were not filed until June 2026, those required background checks did not identify any criminal charges or convictions at the time of hire.”
Leonardos said the charges do not involve any Lowell Community Charter students.
