Criminal charges accusing King County Assessor John Wilson of stalking his ex-fiancée Lee Keller have been dropped by the city of Seattle after Wilson's attorneys submitted a series of texts allegedly sent from Keller to Wilson in May.
"I'm probably making a huge mistake, but I'm just following my heart," Keller texted on Friday, May 22.
"I don't want to get you in trouble.
I just want to talk to you."
Wilson's attorney, John Polito of Bellevue, said Keller reaching out via text was an attempt to expose his client to "further criminal prosecution."
"Ms.
Keller's recent string of texts clearly shows she has once again voluntarily willingly engaged in behavior directly opposite to her claim or any claims that she fears for safety with regard to John Wilson," the motion states.
On Monday, the Municipal Court of the city of Seattle dismissed the charges without prejudice and terminated the no-contact order between Wilson and Keller, who had filed multiple restraining orders against him.
"Additional information has been produced," the motion said.
"Victim no longer wants to cooperate."
Last summer, Wilson was arrested at Keller's home and booked into the county jail under investigation of stalking.
Keller, a former radio reporter turned communications consultant, claimed Wilson had tracked her location, found her at an undisclosed address, and burst in to kiss her against her will.
"I have never felt like this in my life," Keller told KUOW last July.
"I've never been scared to leave my home."
In the wake of that arrest, Wilson dropped his bid to become King County executive.
In October, he apologized for his conduct on Facebook and said he would not run for reelection as county assessor when his term expires at the end of 2026.
In March, Wilson was criminally charged with two gross misdemeanors for allegedly violating a no-contact order by stalking and harassing Keller.
The King County Council called for Wilson to resign as county assessor, but he refused.
In the defendant's motion, Polito said the latest texts from Keller show that her framing of their relationship and the portrayal of Wilson as a stalker is inaccurate.
"John Wilson will not resign under these circumstances nor should he merely based on a dysfunctional relationship in his private life that has absolutely nothing to do with his duties and role as the King County Assessor," the motion reads.
Keller released a statement Monday that said she did not want a drawn out trial and was withdrawing her support for the criminal case.
“I’m trying to get on with my life and do not want to go into a long and extended trial over this," Keller said.
"I appreciate the support I have received from Seattle police and city prosecutors.
I don’t have anything to say beyond that.”
