Still calling out ICE two weeks after Biddeford killing, Maine Dems and faith leaders take strong positions 53%

It’s been two weeks since an agent shot and killed 26-year-old Colombian national Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Biddeford, and in two events late last week, Mainers called out ICE’s violent tactics and called for change.
Last Thursday, Maine clergy and faith leaders joined others in Texas and Florida (states where ICE has recently killed people) to call for an end to ICE violence.

The event in Portland was organized by the Greater Portland Multifaith Clergy Organizing Group and Maine Council of Churches, along with Multifaith Justice Maine, which like Beacon, is a project of Maine People’s Alliance.
Sara Ewing Merrill, lead pastor at the HopeGateWay Church, Portland, said the federal government’s tactics on immigration enforcement amount to “oppressing anyone who gives off any signals that they might have been born somewhere else other than the US…or have more melatonin than someone like me.”

But, she said, faith leaders “will not stand by quietly…while people are murdered on our streets by federal agents whose identities are shielded by our government.
We will not stand by while people are kidnapped at gunpoint on our streets by masked men.”
The faith leaders called for full accountability and transparent investigations; for ICE agents to, at a minimum, operate at the same standard as other federal and state law enforcement; for elected officials to oppose all additional funding to ICE and Border Patrol; and for the return to Maine of all those from Maine detained by ICE.
On Saturday, Maine Democrats met to choose a new candidate for the US Senate nomination, and took a moment to acknowledge the shooting, call out Sen.
Susan Collins, and call for change.
Speaking to the crowd of 499 delegates, Maine Democratic Party Chair Charlie Dingman said Maine Democrats “value community, kindness, hard work, civil rights, caring for our neighbors and a fair opportunity to get ahead.”
But, he continued, “behind a smokescreen of violence and propaganda Donald Trump’s Republican party has worked against all of those values, and Sen.
Susan Collins has been complicit in all of it.”
It’s not yet clear exactly how the investigation of Guerrero’s death will proceed, but several new laws go into effect this week intended to protect Mainers from ICE overreach and violence in jails, homes and some public spaces.
