Northrop Grumman has launched a robotic spacecraft designed to extend the operating lives of aging communications satellites without refueling them.
The mission will test a new servicing model that allows a single spacecraft to install propulsion modules on multiple satellites in geostationary orbit.
SpaceX launched the Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV) and three Mission Extension Pods aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on July 21.
The spacecraft will now make its way to geostationary orbit, where the servicing campaign will begin in the coming weeks.
The mission required the Falcon 9’s full performance, leaving no margin to recover the first-stage booster.
SpaceX therefore retired the booster after a record 32 flights.
Unlike Northrop ‘s earlier Mission Extension Vehicles, which remained attached to a single satellite for years, MRV is designed to move from one customer to another.
The spacecraft will retrieve each Mission Extension Pod, approach a client satellite, and use two robotic arms to install the hardware before moving on to its next assignment.
The pods do not transfer fuel into a satellite.
Instead, they attach to the structural ring at the rear of the spacecraft and rely on their own electric propulsion systems to provide station-keeping and attitude control.
Northrop estimates the technology can keep a typical geostationary communications satellite operating for about six additional years.
Northrop said the mission represents a broader shift in how spacecraft could be maintained in orbit.
In a post on X following the launch, the company wrote, “Today’s launch is the start of something bigger.
Our Mission Robotic Vehicle is opening the door to a future where repairing, upgrading and building in space is part of the routine, not the exception.”
Commercial customers first
The first mission will install three Mission Extension Pods purchased by commercial satellite operators.
Intelsat ordered two of the units, while Australia’s Optus acquired the third.
MRV itself is expected to remain operational for about 15 years.
After completing the first installations, Northrop plans to launch additional pods for future customers while keeping the servicing spacecraft in orbit to retrieve and install them.
Today's launch is the start of something bigger.

The company has already demonstrated satellite life-extension technology with its Mission Extension Vehicles.
MEV-1 and MEV-2 completed three docking missions between 2020 and 2025 for Intelsat and Optus satellites.
Those vehicles stayed attached to a single spacecraft, whereas MRV is designed to service several satellites over its lifetime.
DARPA’s orbital legacy
The robotic servicing system traces its origins to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s Robotic Servicing of Geosynchronous Satellites program, which began in 2016.
DARPA developed the robotic payload, including the spacecraft’s articulated arms, while Northrop Grumman funded the servicing vehicle and adapted the technology for commercial operations.

The U.S.
Space Force has also indicated it wants access to MRV once the spacecraft enters service, viewing it as a commercial capability that government operators could use when needed.
Northrop has not announced any government contracts tied to the vehicle, but the company expects to expand the mission with future pod deployments as demand for on-orbit servicing grows.
