It is merely human nature to wonder what’s at the other end of any mysterious rope or cable one might encounter in the world, but rarely does the result wind up being worth anything, much less millions of dollars. 
But one Austrian plumber hit the proverbial and literal jackpot. 
While renovating a Vienna villa, he caught a glimpse of such a rope sticking out of a basement floor, and after digging through the concrete it protruded from, he was, well, floored. 
The rope was attached to a real-life treasure chest full of gold worth an estimated $2.4 million. 
The 66 pounds of gold coins were dated to before World War II, thanks to the image of the composer Mozart stamped on each one, and sat in a rusty metal chest embedded in the concrete of a cellar in the Penzing area of the capital of Austria. 
“Something like that is really unbelievable,” the man told the German Today talk show in 2024. 
“I have been on the construction site since I was 15. 
Every now and then you find a few coins, but a discovery like this is incredible.” 
In an added twist, the man may get to keep up to half the haul, even though it isn’t his property. 
In Austria, the law provides special treatment for discovered treasure, allowing the finder and the property owner to split the treasure. 
That special situation was almost in the hands of another worker at the site, according to German media. 
In the days before, another worker noticed the unusual rope but ignored it. 
When the plumber in question, who was not named, began work in the basement and noticed the rope, he first started pulling it, trying to free it from the ground. 
Since it wouldn’t budge, he took a shovel to the concrete floor, eventually freeing the metal chest from where someone had cemented some years ago. 
Can you imagine being the person to crack that open? 
Old coin and even ancient coin discoveries happen pretty frequently across Europe, and in a variety of ways. 
In recent years, a group of seven friends with metal detectors stumbled upon the richest treasure find in all of Britain in a farmer’s field, uncovering 2,584 silver coins from between 1066 and 1088 AD valued at $5.6 million. 
Also in England, a couple discovered 100 coins from the first English Civil War when renovating a 17th century structure on their farm. 
A bounty of 2,150 early Medieval silver coins were found in Czech Republic by a woman on a walk. 
Sometimes you need to go underwater for a discovery, such as in Italy when a diver discovered 30,000 copper and bronze coins minted in Rome during the fourth century. 
And in a southwest German town, another construction worker planning to lay pipes for a pool uncovered 1,600 Medieval coins minted around 1320 AD. 
Now, thanks to a weird cement-anchored rope, Vienna joins the list with one of the more surprising treasure troves found in Europe.
