Pingree faces off against anti-choice rivals on abortion 65%

One of the key divides in Maine’s race for governor came into focus this week as Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund PAC endorsed Democratic candidate Hannah Pingree and warned that her two opponents, Republican Bobby Charles and independent Rick Bennett, stand in direct opposition to abortion rights.
“Maine cannot take these protections for granted,” said President and CEO Nicole Clegg.
“The next governor will help decide whether we continue our long-standing tradition of respecting the rights of our families, friends, and neighbors to make personal, private decisions without political interference.”
Pingree, the former Maine House speaker, pledged that as governor she would work to enshrine the right to abortion in the Maine Constitution, protect access to abortion medication including mifepristone, and maintain state funding for reproductive health care providers.
Her opponents’ records are starkly different.
Charles: Proudly against reproductive rights
Charles, the Republican nominee, has made no secret of where he stands.
He has called abortion “abhorrent,” describes himself as unapologetically pro-life, and celebrated the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v.
Wade.
Pingree called him an anti-abortion extremist, and Clegg said she believes Charles would use every power available to a governor to strip away access to reproductive health care.
Pressed by reporters, Charles didn’t repudiate his past statements, instead telling the Maine Morning Star that he would “uphold any existing state and federal laws.”
He pointedly didn’t commit to not changing those laws to outlaw abortion in Maine.
Bennett: Opposed abortion protections after fall of Roe
Bennett, the former Maine Republican Party chairman now running as an independent, presents himself as a supporter of abortion rights, pointing to a bill he cosponsored three decades ago to codify Roe in Maine law.
But his votes as a state senator in the years immediately following the fall of Roe tell another story.
In June 2022, the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision ended the federal right to abortion, putting the question in the hands of individual states.
When Maine lawmakers moved to shore up protections in the sessions that followed, Bennett repeatedly voted against them.
During the 2023–24 legislative session, he opposed a constitutional amendment that would have let Maine voters enshrine the right to reproductive autonomy in the state constitution.
He voted against shield legislation protecting Maine reproductive care providers from prosecution under other states’ anti-abortion laws.
He opposed requiring insurance coverage of contraceptives and voted against establishing state funding for family planning services.
In 2022, he also backed defunding Planned Parenthood.
“Bobby Charles proudly wears his anti-abortion record on his sleeve.
Rick Bennett would rather Mainers focus on his election-year talking points than his anti-choice voting record,” said Maine Democratic Party spokesperson Lauryn Fanguen.
“When reproductive freedom was on the line, Bennett’s record and Charles’ rhetoric make clear that neither candidate can be counted on to protect abortion rights and access.”
Protecting access to abortion has long been popular in Maine and Maine voters appear to be siding with the candidate committed to protecting access.
A University of New Hampshire Pine Tree Poll released this week found Pingree leading Charles 49% to 35% among likely voters, with Bennett at just 6% and 8% undecided.
The survey of 1,236 Maine residents, conducted July 15-20, carries a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points and echoes a June New York Times/Portland Press Herald/Siena poll showing a similar double-digit Pingree lead.
The issue will likely continue to be a focal point for the election, with clear policy divides between the candidates and continued federal attacks on reproductive health care.
Which candidate is elected as governor may determine whether Maine’s firewall protecting access to abortion services continues to hold.
