Citizens could overturn Idaho’s abortion ban, as this November, Idaho voters will decide whether to enact the “Reproductive Freedom and Privacy Act.”
The act would ensure people can make their own reproductive healthcare choices with a doctor, including access to birth control, abortion, in-vitro fertilization, care for miscarriages, and more.
Idahoans United for Women and Families, which gathered more than 110,000 signatures across the state to get the initiative on the ballot, confirmed to the Idaho Capital Sun on Monday (as did the Idaho Secretary of State) that clerks verified enough signatures for it to qualify.
The initiative will be labeled differently on ballots to match an approved short-title meant to reference the restoration of Roe v.
Wade abortion access — up to fetal viability, and after that in medical emergencies or fatal diagnosis for the fetus.
“For nearly 50 years, Idahoans had the personal liberty to make private medical decisions—including regulated access to abortion—with their doctors, not politicians,” the campaign to end Idaho’s trigger ban on abortion states.
“Since the ban, doctors are leaving, delivery rooms are closing, and everyone is finding it harder to access basic medical care.”
The group’s simple pitch is: “Back to Liberty.
Back to Privacy.
Back to Idaho.
It’s time to end the ban.”

Three years ago, Washington state passed a law specifically giving the state Department of Health the right to conduct unannounced health and safety checks in private detention facilities.
But health inspectors still have not been able to assess the conditions or investigate health and safety complaints made about the Northwest Immigration and Customs Enforcement Processing Center in Tacoma.
That could soon change, as last week a judge ordered GEO Group, the private owner and operator of the Tacoma ICE facility, to let state health workers inside.
The preliminary injunction, which was stayed for 14 days to allow for potential appeal, states that Geo Group “shall admit Washington Department of Health inspectors to the Tacoma facility to enforce” the 2023 state law, “except with respect to ICE-controlled administrative and medical areas.”
In a July 9 statement, Washington Gov.
Bob Ferguson noted that this isn’t the first time a judge has told GEO Group the state has a right to ensure health and wellness among detainees.
“GEO Group needs to stop fighting a losing court battle and follow the law,” Ferguson said.
“The complaints we’re hearing from people held in the facility are alarming.
GEO Group says they’re false — if that’s true, they should prove it by letting our health inspectors into the building.”

The School-Cycle Drive through July 31 allows folks to donate supplies — including notebooks and paper, calculators, binders, pencils, and artsy supplies like crayons, markers and paint — at any Spokane Public Library locations (aside from The Hive) or Spokane County Library District branch.
Organized by Spokane County Regional Waste Ambassadors and Art Salvage, the School-Cycle Drive is only in its second year.
Whatever materials are collected by the end of the month will be sorted and packaged by volunteers before they’re distributed.
