NOPD proposes Mardi Gras changes with new start times for 5 parades, 2 new routes 11%

Some New Orleans Mardi Gras parades could get earlier start times during the 2027 Carnival season if the City Council approves changes being proposed by the New Orleans Police Department.
The proposed changes include moving start times for five parades and changing starting locations for two parades, with the goal of avoiding police overtime and changing routes on the same night.
Under the changes, on the Wednesday before Mardi Gras (Feb. 3), the Krewe of Druids would start at at 5 p.m., compared to 6:15 p.m. in 2026.
On the Friday before Mardi Gras (Feb. 5), the start-time would remain the same, but the order of parades would shift.
The Krewe of D'Etat would start, followed by the Krewe of Hermes and the Krewe of Morpheus.
In 2026, Hermes started, followed by D'Etat and Morpheus.
The first parade's start time would remain the same at 5:30 p.m.
On the Saturday before Mardi Gras (Feb.
6), Tucks would start 30 minutes later, at to 1 p.m., not 12:30 p.m.
Some of the starting locations would change, too.
The Knights of Sparta, scheduled on Jan. 30, would start at Tchoupitoulas Street and Napoleon Avenue, instead of Jefferson Avenue and Magazine Street.
On Feb. 5, the Friday before Mardi Gras, Krewe of D'Etat would start at Magazine and Napoleon, instead of Jefferson and Magazine.
The proposal is set to be presented at a city council Government Affairs Committee meeting on Wednesday afternoon.
In the presentation, the NOPD said "later evenings" create the potential for more overtime expenses and decrease time off for officers between shifts, which could cause burnout and the "possibility of human error."
"NOPD is implementing route and schedule changes to help address these difficulties," the presentation said.
Any changes, however, would have to be adopted by ordinance, said a spokesperson for NOPD.
Mardi Gras falls on Feb. 9 in 2027.
