Charlotte crime drops 16% as CMPD reports fewer offenses 48%

The number of crimes reported by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department declined across broad categories for the first six months of 2026, according to figures released by CMPD.
The data, tracking offenses from Jan. 1 through June 30, details a 16% decrease in overall crime compared to the same six months of 2025.
The overall decline included an 8% decline in violent crime and a 17% reduction in property crimes.
The number of homicides rose slightly.
"These reductions reflect coordinated, proactive, precision policing and the involvement of the community," Chief of Police Estella D.
Patterson said in a statement.
"Public safety is a shared responsibility.
When residents step forward and law enforcement agencies work together, cases are solved faster, trust grows and our city becomes safer."
Violent Crime and Homicides
While total violent crime fell, homicides increased by 3%.
CMPD recorded 40 homicides during the first half of 2026, compared to 39 during the same period in 2025.
The department’s homicide unit currently clears about 75% of all cases, a figure higher than the national average, Patterson said.
Department officials said community cooperation remains vital to closing violent crime investigations, and Patterson urged residents to report suspicious behavior and register their security cameras with ConnectCharlotte.org .
Other violent crime categories saw decreases.
Aggravated assaults dropped 4% (2,043 offenses compared to 2,127 in 2025), rapes fell 12% (81 compared to 92), and robberies decreased 23% (405 compared to 525).
Property Crime Trends
Property crime decreased by 17% overall, dropping to 14,610 reported offenses from 17,675 in the first half of 2025.
Major property crime reductions include:
Commercial burglaries: Down 40% (806 incidents compared to 1,332)
Residential burglaries: Down 21% (634 incidents compared to 804)
Vehicle thefts: Down 31% (2,163 incidents compared to 3,127)
Larcenies from automobiles: Down 29% (3,663 incidents compared to 5,151)
Arsons: Down 3% (70 incidents compared to 72)
Youth Safety Interventions
At a media briefing where CMPD released the data, officials spent significant time focused on juvenile safety measures during the summer months.
A day earlier, Patterson had asked the Charlotte City Council to amend the city’s Youth Protection Ordinance , which imposes various curfews for unaccompanied juveniles under age 16.
If the council approves CMPD’s request, the earliest curfew would be moved from 10 p.m. to 9 p.m. and would include teens ages 16 and 17.
Patterson said the new curfews are needed to discourage so-called “teen takeovers,” organized events where hundreds of youths congregate in a single location.
While the “takeovers” are not illegal, some have seen isolated cases of violence, vandalism and disruption to businesses.
Law enforcement and elected officials in other major U.S. cities are facing similar challenges, with some toughening their curfew laws and others organizing supervised events for teens.
In Charlotte, crimes that listed a juvenile as a suspect decreased by 15% in the first half of 2026.
CMPD credited this decline to street-level enforcement, the Community Services Bureau's outreach, and community partners establishing safe summer programming.
However, CMPD noted that "teen takeover" incidents remain a serious issue that requires ongoing attention.
CMPD noted that its crime statistics align with national reporting guidelines established by the FBI, which do not include homicides committed in self-defense or to protect the life of another person.
CMPD does not include those “justifiable homicides” in its crime reports.
