A 59-year-old man died Monday after being found unresponsive in the Mecklenburg County Detention Center.
Todd Williams was pronounced dead on Aug. 3 at Atrium Main following emergency medical care.
He had been held at the Mecklenburg jail since July 27.
His death was announced in a statement by the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the statement, a detention officer found Williams unresponsive on Sunday, Aug. 2, at approximately 8:55 a.m, and detention officers began lifesaving measures, which continued until first responders arrived, the statement said.
MEDIC arrived at the facility at 9:16 a.m., followed by the Charlotte Fire Department at 9:22 a.m.
Williams was taken to Atrium Main at 9:40 a.m.
In the statement, the sheriff’s office declined to provide further details, citing confidentiality laws.
Mecklenburg Sheriff Garry McFadden expressed condolences to Williams's family.
“We recognize the profound loss they are experiencing, and they remain in our thoughts as they grieve," he said in the statement.
"Any death in our custody is taken with the utmost seriousness, and we remain dedicated to the care of every person entrusted to our custody.”
McFadden said many individuals arrive at the detention center with “significant physical and mental health conditions, substance use disorders, and other complex medical needs.”
“These realities require constant vigilance, compassion, and collaboration with our medical partners,” he said.
“Although we cannot always prevent every tragedy, we remain committed to providing appropriate care, maintaining transparency, and continuously working to improve the health and safety of everyone in our custody.”
As is standard with in-custody deaths, the State Bureau of Investigation will investigate Williams’ death, while the medical examiner will determine the official cause of death.
