Juan Cox was officially sworn in as the St.
Louis County Police Department’s chief Wednesday at the county government building in Clayton.
Cox stood before the St.
Louis County Board of Police Commissioners<b> </b>as<b> </b>Chairman Richard Banks officiated a short oath of office ceremony.
“It is my honor and privilege this morning to award this certificate of promotion to Col.
Juan Cox, who is now chief of the St.
Louis County Police Department,” Banks said.
“Thank you, sir, and I’m looking forward to working with you.”
Cox responded with brief remarks.
“Thank you guys for being here and for your support.
And thank you board for trusting me with the keys of the truck, I’ll try not to break it,” Cox said and laughed.
Cox’s family and friends attended the ceremony, and the room was packed with police officials.
The department also acknowledged other internal promotions, awards and scholarships.
The police board<b> </b>voted earlier this month to elevate Cox, 57, to the chief’s role on a permanent basis.
He had been acting chief since his predecessor, Kenneth Gregory, retired in April.
Cox joined the department in 1995 and has served in eight bureaus throughout the county.
He created Careers and Pathways Through Law Enforcement, an initiative that solicits youth and teens to work in<b> </b>the field.
He’s also responsible for creating the St.
Louis County Police Athletic League and chaired the committee that led to construction of a child care facility for county police employees.
It was Cox’s “experience, his background, and quite candidly his results” that elevated him to the chief role, police Commissioner Brian Ashworth said when his appointment was announced June 9.
St.
Louis County Executive Sam Page, who attended Cox's ceremony, has called Cox a “respected leader” who is “passionate about public safety and working with residents.”
Cox said his vision for the department is simple.
“I just want it to be recognized as one of the premier police departments in the nation.
That’s community outreach, that's leveraging technology, employee satisfaction, it's all encompassing,” he said when his appointment was first announced.
