Giant hole could lead to sewage backup during storms, St. Louis sewer officials warn 37%

The Metropolitan St.
Louis Sewer District issued a precautionary advisory Wednesday warning of possible sewage backups in downtown St.
Louis basements.
MSD officials said last week’s water main break and street collapse under Interstate 44 may increase the risk of basement flooding when it rains.
The National Weather Service said heavy rain is possible Wednesday afternoon and evening.
The agency also issued a tornado watch for much of the St.
Louis metro area until 10 p.m.
Wednesday.
The watch includes Quincy.
MSD officials said people near North Broadway and Biddle should prepare now for a higher-than-normal risk of sewer backups during rain until repairs on the large hole and broken sewer main are complete.
The agency says it’s still unclear how long those repairs will take.
A map released Wednesday identifies three areas of increased risk for backups during heavy rainfall:
Zone 1 (Red): Area believed to have the highest increased risk.
Zone 2 (Orange): Area believed to have a moderately increased risk.
Zone 3 (Yellow): Area believed to have a low but increased risk.
MSD also recommends property owners in the area move valuables, electronics and irreplaceable items above the basement level.
If you can’t move the items, try to elevate them as high as possible.
The agency is also asking people to minimize water use during rain, including delaying laundry, dishwashing and long showers.
Anyone experiencing a sewer backup should avoid contact with the water, stay out of the flooded areas and call MSD Project Clear’s Customer Service team at 314-768-6260.
