The man who police say fired an AR-15 in a North Las Vegas neighborhood before dying in custody has been identified by the Clark County coroner’s office.
Daniel Lujan Jr., 39, died following the Sunday incident in the 6000 block of Yellowhammer Place, near Aviary and Deer Springs ways, according to the coroner.
North Las Vegas Police said officers were called around noon to reports of a man randomly firing an assault rifle on a residential street.
When officers located the man, identified as Lujan, he resisted their attempts to arrest him, police said.
“Once apprehended, the suspect became unresponsive and was transported to UMC Trauma Center,” where he was pronounced dead, police said in a news release.
Neighbors said officers used a less-than-lethal shotgun and Taser on Lujan at close range.
Among them was Jordan Diltz, who recorded the incident.
Video recorded by Diltz showed a man lying on a sidewalk as a patrol car and several officers approached him.
The man, who did not appear to be holding a long gun, stood and stumbled as he tried to run from at least seven officers running toward him.
The video appears to show the man run toward an officer and fall after making contact.
He then appears to hit the officer with his hat while on his back before the officer stood over him and punched at his head repeatedly.
Several officers surrounded the man on the ground while an officer swung at him, the video showed.
Diltz previously said officers shot the man with what appeared to be a less-than-lethal bean bag shotgun round and tased him.
Asked to release body camera footage from the shooting, North Las Vegas police said the investigation was still active.
“As the investigation progresses, the North Las Vegas Police Department anticipates releasing additional information through a Critical Incident Media Release, which will include a prerecorded briefing outlining the preliminary facts of the incident,” department spokesperson Roberto Vaquera said in an emailed statement.
“A release date has not yet been finalized.”
