IKEA has long positioned itself as a green company.
But a new documentary looks at whether the Swedish company is a beacon of sustainability or the makers of green-washed fast furniture.
Director Maia Wikler and a small team of filmmakers spent three years in Romania following activist Gabi Paun as he worked to expose IKEA’s alleged ties to illegal logging in the country's old-growth forests.
She joins us to talk about "Wild East", which premiers at Sheffield DocFest in England next week.
Statement from IKEA, June 5, 2026:
We recognise that forests are something people care deeply about, and welcome informed discussion about how forests are managed.
Allegations made by the NGO have been investigated by internal and independent external parties and have been found to be without substance.
Either we did not use wood from the locations mentioned in our products, or the logging activities were carried out in compliance with applicable regulations and FSC certification.
We take all allegations seriously.
However, when investigations consistently reach the same conclusion, we have a responsibility to be clear: no wrongdoing has been identified, and the allegations concerning the IKEA supply chain do not reflect reality.
At the same time, we recognise that forestry practices, especially during logging operations, can and should continue to improve in Romania.
Identifying areas for improvement is a responsibility of competent authorities, as well as FSC, which IKEA requires for its wood sourcing.
We expect our supply chain partners to address those.
We are committed to ensuring that the forests we source from or own are responsibly managed.
We maintain strict requirements and control systems for both our wood sourcing and forests owned by companies under the IKEA brand.
If irregularities are identified, we take appropriate action, including correcting wrongdoing or, if necessary, ending the business relationship.
