St.
Louis Mayor Cara Spencer said Friday that city workers, the police department and Grove area restaurant and bar owners are working together to make the end of Pride month a success.
Spencer acknowledged that she misspoke last week when she said Grove bar owners agreed to close at midnight this weekend during Pride celebrations for safety precautions, which left some bar and restaurant owners confused and upset because they said they did not agree to a particular closing time.
“I want to apologize,” Spencer said at a press conference.
“We do know that it is up to each and every bar owner, and the circumstances will really dictate those decisions at the time.”
Both Spencer and Police Chief Robert Tracy clarified that bars and restaurants do not have to legally shut down before their closing times.
And to ensure safe celebrations, additional police officers will patrol the city throughout Pride weekend.
“Our goal is simple: Create an environment where everyone can celebrate safely and enjoy the weekend without disruption,” Tracy said on Friday.
“It's important to reiterate: The individuals who disrupted the celebrations in the Grove last year were not representative of the businesses, residents, or those celebrating Pride.”
Some bar owners in the Grove say they plan to keep regular operating hours throughout the weekend and have always had safety measures in place in case of disruptions outside or inside their establishments.
Beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday, Manchester Avenue will be closed between Sarah Street and Boyle Avenue in the Grove, where many Pride festivities will take place.
There is a juvenile curfew in place for people 17 years old and younger between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. on June 27 and June 28 in the Forest Park Southeast neighborhood, which includes the Grove.
Parents can meet children at the reunification center, spearheaded by the Office of Violence Prevention.
Pride St.
Louis officials said that they have been planning PrideFest all year and that this year’s event will be a safe celebration and a joyful ending to Pride month.
There is a planned protest in downtown St.
Louis on Sunday to demand that Enterprise stop renting cars out to ICE agents.
Pride St.
Louis officials said that PrideFest is an inclusive space and that they are not worried about the demonstrations during the festival or the Grand Pride Parade.
“We are aware of that event, and we welcome that,” said Arthur Nunn, president of Pride St.
Louis.
“We have security in place if it's needed, but I don’t expect there to be any concerns.”
Nunn encourages everyone to participate in Pride festivities throughout the weekend as their authentic selves.
Spencer said she plans to meet with the city’s LGBTQIA Advisory Board immediately after Pride to begin conversations about how to better prepare for future Pride events.
