A Bay Area task force arrested two dozen suspected human traffickers among the hundreds of thousands of people who convened in Santa Clara for the 2026 World Cup this summer, authorities said.
A coalition of law enforcement agencies, social workers, advocates and analysts across 11 Northern California counties conducted 66 separate operations during the six World Cup matches held at Levi’s Stadium, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement Friday.
Authorities said they identified and offered support to 53 survivors of human trafficking, recovering 11 children and connecting 42 adults with advocates and supportive services.
The effort saw 25 suspected traffickers arrested and 41 suspected sex buyers cited.
“We are proud that Santa Clara County showcased itself to the world so well and so safely, and with one voice declared our intolerance for the illegal trafficking of human beings,” said Santa Clara District Attorney Jeff Rosen in a statement.
“We are standing with the survivors and providing them support and services so that they can go on to live a life free of cruel criminal exploitation.”
Undercover investigators in Santa Clara County used “decoy communications” to find suspected traffickers during one sting, arresting 13 suspects who responded to various hotels on suspicion of pandering, the district attorney’s office said.
Authorities conducted a similar operation around the Super Bowl at Levi’s Stadium in February, arresting 29 traffickers and contacting 73 trafficking survivors, the district attorney’s office said.
The survivors included 10 children, one of whom was as young as 12.
Although trafficking crackdowns around large sporting events are common, studies have found no evidence that trafficking increases around events like the World Cup, Super Bowl or Olympic Games, and some experts warn that treating trafficking as event-based can downplay its developmental nature.
