Over the weekend, 45-year-old Laurel Travis drowned while tubing with friends on the Trinity River.
Still processing the profound loss, her wife, Corazón Villota, is channeling her immense grief into raising awareness about river safety in an effort to prevent another local tragedy.

“If Laurel had had more information, maybe she would be alive now,” Villota told the
Outpost
in a recent phone interview, her voice breaking with emotion.
“We did everything we could — she was wearing a life vest, and I made sure it was Coast Guard-approved and everything — but we didn’t have enough information to protect Laurel.
… I know people say that after a certain point it’s safe to swim [in the Trinity River], but it’s not true for all areas.
You can’t just rely on that.”
Travis died on Saturday afternoon after her inner tube overturned and she was swept underwater by a strong current along the river’s edge, near Salyer in Trinity County.
As detailed in a

from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, Travis’ life vest caught in a tree branch, trapping her underwater while her two friends struggled to free her against the unrelenting current.
When Travis finally resurfaced after nearly 10 minutes underwater, she was unconscious.
Her friends got her to shore and immediately began performing CPR, calling 911 in the process.
Sheriff’s deputies and medics with the Salyer Volunteer Fire Department quickly responded to the scene and continued “extensive lifesaving measures,” but it was too late.
Travis was pronounced dead shortly after 2:30 p.m.
Travis is the second person to drown in the Trinity River this month.
Another person, who has yet to be publicly identified, drowned near the Campbell Creek area of Hoopa just two days earlier on Thursday, July 16, after being swept underwater by a strong current.
The day after Travis’ untimely death, Villota
posted to the Humboldt County on Alert Facebook group
to warn people about dangerous conditions on the Trinity.
The post received 1,000-plus comments, many of which extended prayers and condolences to Travis’ loved ones.
Villota felt others were dismissive of what had happened.
“There were people in the comments saying, ‘Oh yeah, people die there every year,’ but I don’t think we have to accept all these deaths like they’re just normal,” Villota said.
“I think we can do better, and it should matter more because these lives are precious.
People don’t be criticizing people [without knowing the full story] because we did everything we could.
… I even told her about avoiding branches on the side.”
When Travis first mentioned the river trip, Villota said she urged her not to go, given her lack of experience on the water, “but she was determined to do it.”
“This was a period in her life when she was blossoming and growing as a person.
Getting to do this trip was like taking a risk and trying something new,” Villota said.
“But I really want to make it clear, even though she didn’t have a lot of experience, she wasn’t reckless at all, and she took it seriously.
… One of the comforts I have is that [her friends] said they were all having a really good time … [They] said Laurel was beaming and kept saying over and over, ‘This is the best day,’ up until right before [the accident].”
The Trinity River can be extremely dangerous, especially in the spring and early summer when its frigid waters are moving at thousands of cubic feet per second.
While the Trinity tends to be safer later in the summer, strong currents and submerged snags are ever-present.
Every summer, the HCSO publishes a list of safety tips for local river goers, linked below, but Villota feels local officials and emergency responders should do more to identify particularly hazardous areas, either through publicly available brochures or physical markings along the river.
“In the comments [on my post], a lot of people said they really wished that the local government or whoever would put up signs to mark specific areas where the eddies are or where the strainers are,” she said, referring to an obstruction in the waterway (tree limbs, roots, fencing, etc.) that allows water to pass through, but can trap boats and people.
“It’s counterintuitive … but what you’re supposed to do is punch a hole in where the branches are — even a fist-sized hole — and try to shove yourself through it, using the current with you as opposed to trying to fight it.
And if you can, you should get out and walk around it.
Laurel didn’t know to do that.”
“Another person said you should never tube without a paddle,” she continued.
“Had we known, Laurel would have had a paddle, and maybe she could have gotten away from the side.”
The Sheriff’s Office offers the following additional water safety tips:
* **Always wear a properly fitted U.S.
Coast Guard-approved life jacket** when boating, kayaking, paddleboarding or swimming.
* **Never leave children unattended near rivers or creeks.
** Always keep a close eye on kids and make sure they are wearing life jackets.
* **Avoid alcohol and drugs when participating in water activities**, as they impair judgment and reaction time.
* **Do not underestimate the current.
** Even if you’re a strong swimmer, the power of moving water can knock you off your feet and carry you downstream in seconds.
* **Stay informed about river conditions** and obey all posted warning signs and closures.

Villota remembers her wife as someone who loved to take care of other people, both in her professional capacity as a medical assistant and as a partner and friend, despite her own chronic illness.
She was a lover of cats and an avid crocheter.
In the last year of her life, Travis started stepping out of her comfort zone in a way she never had before.
“She started to buy Doc Marten boots with glitter on them, and she dressed like David Bowie with full-length pink glitter pants,” Vilotta said, noting Travis’ history of social anxiety.
“She was volunteering at an indigenous garden, going to movies and taking new risks.
… This trip was actually another example of that; taking a risk, doing something she was scared of and not letting social anxiety hold her back.
I think she finally started realizing her own value.”
“She was goofy, quirky, lovable and just a beautiful soul,” she continued.
“She went too early.”
