SOUTH DEERING — Officials are investigating a Far South Side funeral home after more than 50 decomposing bodies were found in its building Thursday afternoon.
Police and investigators with the state Department of Financial and Professional Regulation responded around 2 p.m. to the South Chicago Chapel, 2939 E. 95th St., to look into a license violation and found the remains of dozens of people, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
The medical examiner’s office is working to identify the decedents and notify their families “as quickly as possible.”
It’s also assessing the conditions of the bodies, which it said were in “various states of decomposition.”
“This process could take several days to ensure proper disposition,” the medical examiner’s office said in a statement.
According to the Sun-Times , citing a police report, a funeral was happening when authorities received a tip that the funeral home was not storing bodies at or below 40 degrees, as required by state law.
Clark Morgan, who was listed on the police report as the funeral director, guided police and investigators through the building, when they found 57 bodies in several areas of the funeral home, according to the Sun-Times.
The business’s license was revoked Wednesday, according to state records, which show Johanna Morgan as funeral director.
The Chicago Sun-Times and other outlets list Clark and Johanna Morgan as husband and wife.
Clark Morgan’s funeral director and embalmer intern license was revoked in 2024, according to state records.
