A California man was charged with murder in the death of his Maine mother, officials say.
Safford James Wolfson, 36, is accused of “bludgeoning” 61-year-old Angela Caprioli to death with a hammer in his Laguna Beach home, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.
Caprioli was “visiting from Maine,” the release said.
Spokespeople for the district attorney’s office could not confirm Caprioli’s town of residence on Thursday.
Laguna Beach police officers responded to Wolfson’s home at about 11 a.m. on July 20 after his grandmother reported finding broken furniture and her grandson covered in blood, according to the district attorney’s office.
Caprioli was found in a bedroom with “severe blunt force injuries to (her) head and face,” the office said, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Wolfson was taken to the hospital to be treated “for self-inflicted injuries to his neck,” the office said.
The Laguna Beach Police Department said it arrested Wolfson on July 23 after he “had previously been identified as a person of interest” and was to be taken to Orange County Jail.
The district attorney’s office said Wolfson is being held on $1 million bail and is scheduled to be arraigned on Oct.
