A serious crash on GW Parkway injured two construction workers and left passengers trapped inside a flaming vehicle on Friday night, authorities say.
One of the construction workers was taken to the hospital in “life-threatening condition,” while the other five people were transported “in critical but stable condition,” U.S.
Park Police told ARLnow.
The crash took place around 10:40 p.m. on southbound GW Parkway near the Boundary Channel exit.
“The vehicle left the roadway, struck a concrete barrier as well as two construction workers, went down an embankment, rolled over, and caught fire,” Park Police said.
“Four vehicle occupants and the two construction workers were transported to local hospitals.”
An additional passenger was reportedly also inside the vehicle, but they managed to get out and fled the scene on foot, authorities said.
The cause of the crash is currently unclear, as is the status of the more badly injured construction worker.
“This is an ongoing investigation with no additional information at this time,” authorities said.
The crash shut down the southbound lanes of the Parkway amid a large fire rescue and police response.
A plume of smoke from the crash was visible from Pentagon City in footage posted by local public safety watcher Dave Statter.
The Arlington County Police Department assisted at the scene but declined to comment, deferring questions to Park Police.
The National Park Service did not immediately respond to a request for more information about the nature of the construction activity near the scene.
