NASCAR driver Kyle Busch was coughing up blood before he was rushed to a North Carolina hospital where the racing icon died Thursday. 
A 911 call made to rescue workers on Wednesday reported that the 41-year-old speedster complained of overheating, experienced shortness of breath and spat blood while training for Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. 
Busch indicated to a reporter from The Athletic last week that he was feeling a little better after fighting off health issues that included a bad cough. 
He became unresponsive while training in a Chevrolet racing simulator in Concord, N.C., on Wednesday and was transported to a Charlotte hospital where he died Thursday after his family said he was battling an unspecified “severe illness.” 
His cause of death has not yet been disclosed. 
First responders who assisted Busch on Wednesday were told he was conscious, but needed help. 
“I’ve got an individual that’s (got) shortness of breath, very hot, thinks he’s going to pass out, and is producing a little bit of blood, coughing up some blood,” a caller from a General Motors training facility told a 911 dispatcher the day before Busch succumbed to his medical issue. 
The caller instructed emergency workers on where to pick Busch up, also advising them to silence their sirens upon arrival. 
Busch’s team at Richard Childress Racing announced prior to their star’s death that substitute driver Austin Hill would race their No. 
8 Chevrolet while its full-time driver was hospitalized. 
On Friday, the team said that car would remain garaged until Busch’s 11-year-old son, Brexton Busch, is ready to get behind the wheel and continue his dad’s legacy. 
Fans and colleagues alike mourned Busch’s death on social media. 
“We’ve lost our Kobe Bryant. 
Today we mourn. 
Forever we remember. 
Rest in peace Kyle,” wrote NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin. 
“Star Trek” actor William Shatner said he was “saddened” to learn that his friend on the X platform was gone.
