Two people have been killed after a small plane crashed on Catalina Island. 
The two-seater, identified as a factory Sling, smashed into a remote area on the south side of the island just after midday. 
The single-engine aircraft was reportedly last spotted near Salta Verde Point. 
Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn said the two people on board were pronounced dead at the scene.

Catalina Island has a remote mountaintop airstrip at around 3,000ft.

She said: “This is a tragedy and my heart goes out to the loved ones of those who lost their lives. 
“I am grateful to our paramedics and Sheriff's deputies who quickly reached this remote area and are handling this incident with professionalism and care.” 
LAFD said: “DOWNED AIRCRAFT | #Catalina l At approx. 12:23 p.m., #LACoFD units responded to a report of an aircraft emergency. 
“Upon arrival, crews found a crashed single engine plane with two fatalities.” 
The NTSB and FAA have launched investigations. 
The Catalina Island Conservancy confirmed to CBS that the plane went down near the city of Avalon. 
The group, which manages the wild life in the area, said that all roads and hiking trails near the crash site have been closed. 
“We are deeply saddened to learn that two lives were lost in this incident and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those on board,” the statement read. 
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Capt. 
Matthew King told the Orange County Register that the plane would up in a ravine on the south side of the island.

According to the third party website that tracks flights, Flightaware, the plane appeared to have taken off from Torrance Zamperini Field on Thursday and crashed on the island. 
It is unclear at this time the plane's final destination, per the OC report.
