Someone has repeatedly poured a suspicious substance around trees at a popular Lake Tahoe beach, authorities said.
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office said deputies discovered evidence of two recent poisonings at Burnt Cedar Beach in Incline Village, Nev., including substances found around the bases of multiple trees.
Similar incidents have been documented at the property since 2022.
Deputies first responded July 24 after someone reported a strong odor near the base of a large pine tree, according to the sheriff’s office.
Investigators collected soil samples that carried an odor similar to substances found in earlier poisoning cases at the beach.
Authorities returned Sunday after additional trees were found with a substance around their bases.
Investigators believe the latest incident occurred between about 11:30 a.m.
Saturday and 5 a.m.
Sunday.
A trail camera recorded a brief light near the area at approximately 2 a.m.
“The deliberate destruction of these trees is deeply troubling and represents a significant loss for the entire community,” Sheriff Darin Balaam said in a statement.
“We are taking these repeated incidents seriously and asking anyone with information to come forward so the person responsible can be identified and held accountable.”
The sheriff’s office has not disclosed what substance was used, how many trees were affected in the latest incidents or whether any of them are expected to die.
The Incline Village General Improvement District, which operates the beach, said it has brought in environmental specialists to assess the trees and surrounding soil and determine how to limit the damage.
The district also said it is taking steps to prevent further incidents.
Burnt Cedar Beach remains open.
The district said there was no immediate threat to the health or safety of visitors.
The lakefront recreation area includes a sandy beach, protected swimming cove, grassy picnic areas, a playground, swimming pools, and a launch area for paddleboards and kayaks.
