With President Donald Trump visiting Nevada on Wednesday, Aug. 5, the two main candidates for governor took the opportunity to make the case that they would be better for the state’s economy than their opponent.
Incumbent Republican Gov.
Joe Lombardo faces Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford in a tight race.
National forecasters tend to show the race leaning slightly in Lombardo’s favor, although the Cook Political Report lists it as a toss-up.
What Aaron Ford said on economy
On Wednesday morning, Ford held a news conference at Café Con Papi near downtown Reno.
“President Trump is in our state today to try to help Joe Lombardo gaslight Nevadans about the economic reality that we're actually experiencing every day,” Ford told reporters gathered in a corner of the coffee shop.
Ford called the governor a “human doormat” for standing behind Trump’s policies.
“With tourism down, unemployment high and inflation climbing, our economy is sinking and working families are struggling to stay afloat,” he said.
“Working Nevadans are dealing with soaring bills and shrinking access to opportunity while Trump and his billionaire friends are padding their pockets at our expense.”
Ford said Lombardo is also to blame for the state's economic situation.
"Under Lombardo," he said, "Nevada has one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation.
Understand this: For his entire tenure as governor, we have reigned at the top of the unemployment list, if not the highest, one of the highest.
That's Joe Lombardo's fault."
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Nevada ranks 45th among all states for unemployment.
What Lombardo said on economy
A few hours later, Lombardo took the stage ahead of Trump at Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas.
After praising the music he walked out to  AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck”  he criticized former President Joe Biden for not taking his calls and praised the relationship built with the Trump administration.
Lombardo referenced how the U.S.
Department of Interior had blocked solar projects in Southern Nevada last year.
Last month, he announced that, after working with the federal government, the Mosey Solar Project and others were back on track.
Trump “listened, understood what was at stake in Nevada and took action,” Lombardo told the crowd Wednesday.
“That’s what real partnership looks like.”
He said Nevada’s economy is growing.
“We've created 100,000 new jobs in Nevada post-pandemic,” Lombardo said.
He claimed Ford’s proposals if elected would lead to higher taxes.
“My opponent  whose name shall not be mentioned  his proposal was evaluated on how he was gonna move the economy forward in Nevada, and that proposal was $18 billion,” Lombardo said.
“So let me ask you something, how are we gonna pay for that?”
The analysis was done by the Lombardo campaign.
